Community Outreach
One of the fundamental pillars of the Galapagos Science Center (GSC) is the engagement with the community of San Cristobal and Galapagos in general. The problem is focused on that, traditionally, investigation in Galapagos has been done in a way where the community is separated from the research process; and in most cases, serving only as administrative support or for logistics.

You will probably hear me say this a lot in the future, but the Galápagos Islands are an excellent model ecosystem. It is a relatively new archipelago, located in the middle of the tropics and mostly undisturbed by humans. Geologically they are also very interesting.
The Galapagos Bullhead Shark Project
The Galapagos Bullhead shark is found across the Galápagos archipelago and in the northern coast of Peru but very little is known about this species. We know that they live in shallow tropical waters around continental and insular shelves. They carry out their life as bottom dwellers, where they blend in well with their habitat

Microbiological studies detect Mycoplasma in Galapagos sea lions
A few days ago Galapagos Science Center (GSC) researchers Soledad Sarzosa and Diego Páez-Rosas, together with several renowned researchers, published their work called “Appearance of mycoplasmas in Galapagos sea lions (Zalophus wollebaeki) and its association with other respiratory pathogens.”
Exploring prenatal stress and its influence on maternal placental physiology and infant development in Galapagos
This paper looked at 24 mothers and infants in Galapagos and highlights how prenatal stress influences maternal placental physiology and infant development. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies of this kind.
Darwin and Wolf, The home of the Vampire Finches
Jaime Chaves, professor at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and a researcher at the Galapagos Science Center (GSC), has been studying finches in the Galapagos Islands for several years. A few days ago, along with Kiyoko Gotanda and Daniel Baldassarre, he published the article titled, “Vampire finches: how Galapagos birds evolved to drink blood” in the digital magazine, The Conversation.
Summary of PI Amanda Thompson’s study on immune development and gut microbiome in Galapagos
GSC Researcher Amanda Thompson, based at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, along with three other collaborators, published an article about human health in Galapagos in the American Journal of Human Biology.

7TH GALAPAGOS RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION SYMPOSIUM
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristóbal Island, will host the 7th Symposium on Research and Conservation in Galápagos. This important multidisciplinary event, which will take place on Monday, July 14 and Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at the Charles Darwin Convention Center, will be organized by the Galapagos Science Center, thanks to the sponsorship of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and with the support of the Galápagos National Park.
6TH GALAPAGOS RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION SYMPOSIUM
The 6th Galápagos Research and Conservation Symposium took place on Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16, 2024 at the Charles Darwin Convention Center on San Cristóbal, Galápagos. This important multidisciplinary event was organized by the Galapagos Science Center, with the sponsorship of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Universidad San Francisco de Quito with the endorsement of the Galapagos National Park.
5TH GALAPAGOS RESEARCH AND CONSERVATION SYMPOSIUM
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, on San Cristóbal Island, will host the 5th Galapagos Research and Conservation Symposium. This significant multidisciplinary event will feature scientific presentations and community-focused talks, showcasing research and initiatives related to conservation, environmental change, biodiversity and oceans, health, and community initiatives.
World Summit on Island Sustainability
In 2022, the Galapagos Science Center (GSC) and the broader UNC & USFQ Galapagos Initiative celebrated its 10th Anniversary. The GSC hosted the World Summit on Island Sustainability on June 26–30, 2022 at the Galapagos Science Center and the Community Convention Center on San Cristobal Island.
